A Spoon Fulla Sugar is a family-owned bakery which has quickly grown since its start in 2008 to become known as one of the top wedding cake vendors in the Greater Cincinnati area.  In the beginning people were able to come in and purchase individual cupcakes, cookies, etc.  Since we’ve grown and taken on more custom orders, we no longer have walk-in customers.  All orders are custom and not made until they are ordered.  We also require these orders be placed 7 – 10 days in advance.

Our main focus is on weddings…Custom wedding cakes, cupcake weddings, groom’s cakes, edible wedding favors and more.  We offer free cake tastings for couples planning their wedding.  You have the opportunity to come to our shop, see some of our work, sample our delicious cakes, fillings and icings and meet with a wedding specialist who can help you along the way.  We want your wedding cake to be you.  You don’t have to choose from cake A, B, or C.  We can help you create something all your own.

Questions Someone May Ask About Their Wedding Cake

Q: Do I need to make an appointment for a cake tasting?
A: Yes, all cake tastings are by appointment only.  Tastings are FREE and available Tuesday – Thursday 11 am – 8 pm and Friday – Saturday 10 am – 5 pm.  Evening and Saturday appointments do book up quickly, so these should often be scheduled a few weeks in advance, especially if you are coming in from out of town.

Q: How long do cake tastings last?
A: We schedule them for a full hour, but many people may be done within 35 – 45 minutes, depending on how many questions they have and if they are making all the decisions at the tasting, or waiting until a later date to determine further details.

Q: Should I bring anything to my cake tasting appointment?
A: If you have design ideas in mind, or swatches, feel free to bring them.  The tasting is basically just our initial meeting.  It gives you a chance to see what we are about, sample our delicious cakes and fillings and discuss the basics of your wedding.  If you are ready to discuss design, we would love to answer your questions.  If you still need more time, that is fine too.  We just try to finalize all details three weeks prior to your wedding and the final payment is due two weeks prior.

Q: How many people can I bring to my cake tasting?
A: We recommend no more than four people at tastings (including the bride & groom).  We understand everyone wants to try the cake, but they will get to try it at the wedding.  Any more than four at a tasting tends to get chaotic and in our experience stresses out the couple.  The more people –  the more opinions.  Yes it is nice to have a couple opinions, but it is your wedding, you should get to make the decision.

Q: How do I reserve a wedding cake for the date of my wedding?
A: We require a $50 “Hold the Date” deposit.  This deposit can be paid at the tasting, or you can call back at a later date to reserve.  The deposit is non-refundable, but it comes off the final balance of the cake.

Q: Once my wedding cake is ordered, can I make changes?
A: Absolutely, that is why we offer Design Appointments.  This gives you a chance to think more about your cake, look up pictures online, or come up with ideas.  Then we can meet at the design appointment to decide all the details.  Everything just MUST be finalized by the time the final payment is due.

Q: How far in advance should I schedule my cake tasting?
A: This depends on the time of year of your wedding.  If your wedding is during the peak of wedding season, your date may book up.  May, June, September and October bride’s should schedule their cake tasting six to nine months in advance.  We have many couples who have their tasting up to a year before the wedding.  If your wedding is January – April, July, August, November, or December, you should be fine scheduling your tasting three to six months in advance. *If you are concerned about booking too early, don’t worry.  You can come in for a cake tasting, see if you like our cake and if so, you can place your deposit.  You don’t need to know the exact design and numbers at this time.  This can be finalized closer to the time via phone/email, or you are more than welcome to schedule a design appointment a month or two prior to your wedding.

Q: Do you use fondant?
A: Yes, we do offer fondant designs and/or your cake can be covered in fondant.  Fondant seems to have a bad stigma associated with it these days, so if you are not interested in fondant, no worries, a majority of our cakes are done with just butter cream.  If we think fondant should be used for a particular design, or transportation/weather purposes, we will let you know.  There are some designs that require fondant and we can’t accomplish the same look you are wanting without it.  We are always more than happy to offer suggestions on ways of achieving similar designs without fondant.  *When using fondant, there is always butter cream underneath it.  So If you don’t like the taste, the fondant can be peeled off and there will be butter cream underneath.

Q: Can I have multiple flavors in my cake? Do you offer fillings?
A: Yes and yes.  Each tier can be a different cake flavor with a different filling.  There is no upcharge for this.

Q: Do you offer “fake cake layers”?
A: No, we do not offer this as an option.  Fake cakes are very time consuming and if we were to make them, you would be charged about the same price as a wedding cake, so we believe you might as well get the real thing!

Q: Can I get a smaller cake and backup servings?
A: Definitely.  We just require you order at least a three-tier cake serving 100 and then you can order backup cakes for additional servings.  This can help keep the price down if you are on a budget.

Q:Do you offer free anniversary cakes?
A: Yes.  You have the option to save your top tier for your first anniversary.  If you do this, make sure you look up how to freeze the cake correctly.  If you prefer to utilize the cake during the wedding for more servings, we offer a free, fresh 6” round cake with a simple design, for your first anniversary.  You can choose any cake flavor and filling.  We ask that you please place the order at least two to three weeks prior to when you want to pick it up.

Q: I’m interested in doing cupcakes…
A: Great, we offer cupcakes for weddings as well.  They all have the option of coming with a free filling and we have a variety of free edible toppers.  Many couples who do cupcake weddings also do a small 6” cake so they have something to cut into.  This is an option as well.

Q:  I don’t like cake…
A: Not a problem.  If you like cheesecake, we can do that as the top two tiers of the wedding cake, for a small up-charge.  Or, we can do a dessert bar.  We have a variety of cookies, tartlettes, brownies, lemon bars, pralines, cheesecake minis, mini cupcakes, etc to choose from.  Ask us for more details.
